Southern Skillet Biscuits

Yields: 12 biscuits

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 12-15 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

There’s nothing quite like the smell of homemade biscuits rising in a hot cast iron skillet. This simple Southern recipe uses just a handful of ingredients and a few tried-and true techniques to give you buttery, flakey, golden-topped biscuits-perfect for breakfast, brunch, or any cozy meal.

  • 2 cups self-rising flour

  • 3/4 cups whole milk (cold)

  • 4 tablespoons frozen butter, shredded

  • 2 tablespoons raw honey

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Prep the Butter

    1. Start by shredding your butter while it’s still frozen. This step is key for creating those tender, flaky layers.

  2. Mix the Dough

    1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the self-rising flour, shredded frozen butter, and honey. Mix until just combined-don’t overwork the dough.

  3. Knead and Fold

    1. Lightly flour a clean surface and turn the dough out onto it. Knead it gently a few times, then roll it out into a rectangle. Fold the dough over itself into thirds (as if folding a letter), then rotate, roll, and repeat 2-3 times. This folding technique creates the beautiful layers we all love.

  4. Let it Rest

    1. Cover the dough with a towel and let it sit for 5-10 minutes to relax and hydrate.

  5. Cut the Biscuits

    1. Roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use a biscuit cutter or the rim of a mason jar to cut out your biscuits. Don’t twist the cutter-just press straight down for the best rise.

  6. Preheat and Prepare the Pan

    1. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit (232 degrees Celsius). Lightly butte a cast iron skillet and arrange the biscuits close together (they help each other rise)

  7. Bake

    1. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown. For an extra treat, brush the tops with melted butter and honey right out of the oven.

Serving Suggestions

Serve warm with more honey, jam, or a dollop of butter. These biscuits pair perfectly with fried chicken, sausage and gravy, or simply a good cup of coffee.
